Did you know you have been classifying things since you were a toddler? Think about it. Everytime your mom tells you to put your socks in the right drawer or putting dishes away in the cabinets. Sorting objects and putting them in order is called classification. We do that everyday! We classify to keep our world organized.
Animals too, are classified in many ways. This helps scientists study the relationships in animal groups and to see the whole animal family tree as it has developed over time. We see animals EVERYWHERE! We give them names and divide them into groups. Animals with backbones are called vertebrates. Animals with NO backbone are called invertebrates. Then we further divide vertebrates into 5 smaller groups: amphibians, birds, mammals, reptiles, and fish. Have you ever asked yourself "What makes a bird a bird, or a reptile a reptile?"
